Basic Background
Millennia ago there was an elven prince by the name of Enalodin, a skilled student of the magical arts. Being the third son of the king, he had no real expectation of ever ascending to a position of real leadership, and this was fine with him, for it gave him more time to devote to his studies. It is said that as his knowledge and skills grew, he became more reclusive, eventually leaving the court entirely to build a fortress far from prying eyes.
What happened then is a matter of speculation, lost to history. Some say that his elder brothers sought out his power to assist in their ambitions, which resulted in a devastation that shattered their nation. Some say that he turned against them first, forcing them to wage war upon his stronghold. Whatever the truth of the matter, both the nation and the fortress vanished, the elven lands breaking up into scattered havens, and the fortress itself cast underground, and buried.
Now, in a land so far removed from those events that its inhabitants hardly recall the elves were there at all, a mysterious ruin has been uncovered. The tunnels beneath have become the breeding ground of monsters and the bolthole of thieves and bandits. It is only a matter of time before that strange place becomes the focus of troubles once more.
